While some view the term yinzers in a negative light, around here, we call these folks JagOffs. Obviously, their mums didn’t hug them enough. It’s either that, or she didn’t let them listen to D.V.E growing up. In all seriousness, the root word is “yinz”, which is simply a regional slang variant of “yall”. While southerners frequently combine “you all” this way, natives of Western Pennsylvania put their own lazy spin on it. If you were forced to use it in a sentence, you could say “yinz better act right in Church” (if your kids are JagOffs and prone to acting like fools in public…for example). In any event, if your life took you to a new city & you hear the word yinz in public after growing up here, it’s like a dog whistle. It alerts you to the likelihood that the human who just said it knows where to party. It’s also highly probable that he/she knows the years of all six of our football Championships, five Cup years, & now they’re praying to live long enough to see another Series. Collectively, we’re Yinzers. Pittsburgh has an intense civic pride and an inexplicable magnetic effect on the natives. It’s difficult to put into words really. Crumbling infrastructure, dwindling population, poor public transit, constant road construction & unbelievable traffic are only SOME of the city’s flaws. But I dare you to find a more amazing view than atop Mt Washington on a clear evening looking down at the fountain illuminating the Point. We’re convinced that no such view exists. Maybe that’s what it is that keeps us in love with a rickety old steel town… we’ve witnessed the glory so much that we’re spoiled. And even when times get rough and nothing’s going our way, we can always take a 30 minute 7 mile drive to Mt Washington to clear our heads. The 3 rivers converge and tell us to rub some dirt on it, get some sleep, and wake up tomorrow and give it your all. Surely there’s more glory heading our way soon. And THAT … is why we’re proud to call ourselves Yinzers!
